How Kudu Got His Curly Horns
One day in Australia after the ice age ended Kangaroo Rat had just found his lunch when he tripped on a rock. His lunch went flying out of his hands into a colorful hole near a slick-rock hill. Kangaroo Rat panicked a little. Then he thought of something. He went out into the outback.
He walked and walked until he found Poison Dart Frog. He said, “Help me, help me, I dropped my lunch in a colorful hole near a slick-rock hill!”. Kangaroo Rat was so frustrated Poison Dart volunteered to go.
Kangaroo Rat said, “You can climb down with your sticky toes and get my food, right?” Poison Dart Frog said, “Maybe.”
As she started climbing down she slipped. As she fell the color of the rock rubbed off onto her skin. She climbed out and hopped away.
Kangaroo Rat went back into the outback. He walked on and on until he found Aardvark. He said, “Help me, help me I dropped my lunch in a colorful hole near a slick-rock hill!” Kangaroo Rat was so mad Aardvark went with him.
When they got there Kangaroo Rat asked, “You can get my food with your long tongue, right?” Aardvark said, “Maybe.”
So he stuck his snout in the hole. He extended his tongue, but he couldn’t reach Kangaroo Rat’s lunch. He tried pulling his nose out but it was stuck. Aardvark pulled and pulled until it popped out. His nose had stretched at least one foot! His nose hurt so bad Aardvark ran away! Kangaroo Rat yelled “Wait!” But Aardvark was already gone.
Kangaroo Rat went into the outback again. He kept walking until he ran into Ostrich. Kangaroo Rat said, “Help me, help me I dropped my lunch in a colorful hole near a slick-rock hill!” Kangaroo Rat was so stressed out Ostrich had to go.
When they got there Kangaroo Rat asked, “You can get my lunch with your big beak, right?” Ostrich said, “Maybe.” Ostrich stuck his head in the hole. He was almost there when his head got stuck. He pulled and pulled but his head didn’t budge. He gave one more big tug and his head popped out. The force of the tug made his head feathers fly off and it made his neck stretch. Ostrich ran away as fast as he could, which was about 63 M.P.H!
Kangaroo Rat ran off into the outback for the last time. He ran and ran until he sped straight into Kudu’s leg! Kangaroo Rat screamed, “Help me, help me I dropped my lunch in a colorful hole near a slick-rock hill!” Kudu said, “What do you want me to do?”. Kangaroo Rat said, “Get my lunch out of the hole!” Kudu heard about the other animals so he said, “Why can’t you do it by yourself?” Kangaroo Rat said, “I’m way to small.” Kudu said, “What about Poison Dart Frog? She’s small and she did it.” Kangaroo Rat just made up another excuse. He kept pleading and pleading until Kudu went with him.
When they got there Kangaroo Rat said, “You can get my lunch with your big horns, right?” Kudu said, “I don’t think so because I don’t want anything to happen to my beautiful horns.” Kangaroo Rat said, “I’ll give you part of my dinner.” That got Kudu satisfied.
Kudu got up on the hill and stuck his horns in the hole. He almost had the lunch when his feet slipped out from under him! As he fell off the hill his horns got stuck on the side of the hole, but his weight was just too much! His horns twisted. When Kudu saw his horns he sprang off as fast as he could. He Told every animal he found not to help Kangaroo Rat.
From then on we see Kudu with curly horns and whenever he sees something surprising he springs away.

The baby bird
Written and Illustrated by River Murdock

Mom was out hunting for bugs and my two older brothers were making one of their evil plots to get me out of the nest. Once they made a sling shot out of two twigs and a piece of dry grass, but the grass just broke when they tried to shoot me out. Luckily for me they're not very smart

My oldest brother looks a Pat potato, has a crooked beak, and always complains about not getting enough food. My second oldest brother looks like an enlarged pea. He acts like my oldest brother is the king, and cry's when he doesn't get what he wants.

I wasn't very scared of their next plan because they never really work. But just in case, I always keep a lookout. Mom came swooping in with three fat juicy worms. When she left again to get food for herself, the battle began!

Everyone jumped on the worms! Feathers flying, beaks pecking! I barely missed being pecked in the face while I was running out of the commotion with one of the worms, my brother grabbed the worm and pushed me. I felt a sharp pain. I was on the ground.

I was walking down the trail when I heard a soft squeaky sound. I looked down and saw a baby bird. I wanted to touch him so much, but if I did, I was afraid his mom wouldn't come back. I ran back to tell dad. Dad was cooking a hotdog on the fire (well, burning it). Mom was taking pictures of flowers, and my brother was pretending to fight monsters.

I ran to Dad as fast as I could.
"Dad, come here!"
"Just a minute, hun, let me cook this hot dog." "But a baby bird fell out of a nest!" "Just a sec."
I waited for a little while until Dad finished. "Where is he?"
"Over here!"

I ran up the trail to the bird, little pink and featherless. Dad came a little later with a ski pole "We can put it in this little basket at the end of this ski pole."

I heard a loud sound and looked up. I saw a giant! They picked me up, put me on a shiny stick and put me up to the nest. I was saved! My brothers looked really scared. Maybe they think that I'm magic! After that they never bothered me again.

The horse and the lizard
By Michelle Valdes
Age 8
A horse and a lizard
Were very best friends
They couldn't stay together
The friendship must end.
The horse was afraid
They couldn't stay together
He might step on his friend
In foggy weather.
Because the lizard's so small
He would be hard to see
And his hooves might hurt him
And he didn't want that to be.
The lizard said maybe I can ride in your saddle
And when we go boating
You should probably paddle.
So they're friends from now on
They're always together
In good or bad weather
Best buds forever.

My Snake
By Kestrel Troutman
Hi my name is Kestrel. My snake's name is Speedy. If you ask why his name is Speedy it's because he is so fast. He is a handsome rat snake and I really like him. In his cage there are rocks and a piece of bark that he hides under. He eats live mice by squeezing them. He feels smooth but scaly when we hold him. He likes to hide in shirt sleeves. Our neighbors found him in their basement and gave him to us. He grew so big that we had to get a bigger cage. Before he sheds his eyes turn cloudy blue. We have four snake skins. He curls up under the bark when he sleeps. He is black and grey. I like watching him smell with his tongue. Speedy is tricky and strong. We have to put rocks on his cage so he won't sneak out. I take Speedy outside to play in the grass. He likes to hide from me. I love Speedy.

The Mystery at H.M.K.
Written by Jayelen Knowles
It was a dark and stormy day at H.M.K. It was right after lunch at one o'clock. The kids were not out playing because it was too wet. So they were all in their classrooms. But only one stranger was out walking on the grass. He had black squeaky shoes and a long, long beard. There was a lonely silence all over the school. All of a sudden the lights went out. And one of the classroom's faucets was dripping water. Everybody is scared. The stranger is still walking on the grass. There was still silence all over. It was scary. There was a lock down. Mrs. Camp's "Teacher of the Year" award is missing.
Jackson and Jayelen hear someone crying. It is coming from Mrs. Camp's room. They walk inside and see Mrs. Camps crying. "Why are you crying", asked Jackson. "I was telling my class to settle down when ... I noticed my "Teacher of the Year" award was missing.
*
Jackson and his little sister Jayelen were on the case.
The principal relied on them because they had solved many mysteries at H.M.K. It was just after Mrs. McKay left that it had gone missing. "Was anybody else in the room at that time?" asked Jayelen. "Mrs. Adams was looking through the window but how can you get a trophy when you're not in the classroom?" sobbed Mrs. Camps. "Mrs. Jenkinson was helping my class and noticed it was gone too." wept Mrs. Camps. I saw Mrs. Nichols lurking around today." whispered Jayelen. It has to be Mrs. McKay because she was the only one in the room." said Jackson and Jayelen at the same time.
So they went to Mrs. McKay's room and they saw the trophy on her desk. They took the trophy and gave it back to Mrs. Camps. Everything is back to normal. Mrs. McKay thought she deserved to have the trophy so she unlocked the case and took the trophy. Case Closed.

The Dark Night Mystery
by Peyton Miley
It was a dark stormy night at HMK. All the lights were off except for the one in the hall. And the only person there was the janitor and he was in the hall. Then he heard the door open!
He didn't know who or what it was. Oh! It was only the principal. But who was that with her? Oh. It was only a teacher getting ready for the week. All I can see is dark class rooms. And all I can smell is chili and cinnamon rolls from yesterday's lunch.
Crash! What was that?! The window was in a million pieces a note that was glittery green flew in. I read it. It said "beware of me! signed..."
Have no fear the detectives are here so here they are Ellie, Jayelen and Peyton and Stinky and Moab "The Wonderdogs!!!!"
So the detectives sat around and had a talk about the suspects. Peyton said "It could be Mrs. Johnson because she has a stack of green paper. And the school bully, Tray. He could be the one" she said, "because, well, he collects all kinds of glitter."
So the detectives sat around in a circle and decided that they should interview the suspects. So first they asked Mrs. Johnson and they asked her if she broke open a window at HMK yesterday? "I promise you I did not!" answered Mrs. Johnson. So the detectives went across the room ancfinterviewed Tray. When they went over there they asked if he broke the window. You know that he is the school bully. He said he didn't do it. Then we said we would stay there until he told the truth. We were there for two hours and he finally admitted to it. He had to help the janitor clean up the glass.

The Missing Chairs
by America Solis
It is a nice and sunny morning. The class was going to a field trip. The teachers are working and they got going but then Scott forgot his lunch and they went back. And they started to swim. When they got back the chairs were missing. And they couldn't see the teacher when they sat down.
After school Alexis and his trusty sister, America, began to investigate the problem. America and Alexis thought it was the janitor but then they found out that it was not the janitor. He was just happy. Then they went to Presten's mom. But it was not him either. He just laughed because he slipped and did the splits. That's why he laughed. But there was no one else to remember.
Scott laughed in an evil way. The janitor was happy because the room was clean. Prestin had a finger print like on the teacher's table.
But then Alexis remembered that Scott went to the class room. And then the detectives went to Scott's house and they talked. Then Scott told the truth and showed them were they were and they finally got to sit down.
My Mom is a Cool Detective
by Claire Allred
On a dark and stormy afternoon it was half day at school. School could be out any minute. Now I said to myself, as soon as the teacher dismisses us, I will run out the front door so my Mom can pick me up. But I was too late to get out and I ran back in the school.
There were writings written in blood on the wall and it looked like first grade writing. I kept on walking until I got to the middle of the hall and I saw a girl who had black hair. I heard something behind me and when I turned around the girl was gone. I ran to the closest door. It was locked. I ran to the office door. Thank goodness it was open. I ran. My mom was not there. I screamed help! Help! Help! Help!!!!!!!! I was screaming so hard. The girl was in a window. I was so scared I ran home. Thank goodness I saw mom driving down the road. I got in the car and my mom drove off and when we got home I talked to my mom about what I saw at school. My mom is a detective. I told her what I did and what I saw. "It was horrible!" I said. My mom said the same thing. She sat me down on the bed. My mom said "What did it look like?" What I said was "There is writing in blood on the wall. I think she's a first grader." I went to bed and watched a movie and when I woke up I forgot all about what I saw at school yesterday. But my mom came in to check on me and I asked my mom what happened. She told me every thing. She said the little girl's name was Desi. She wrote on the wall because she was scared. She thought somebody was after her. It wasn't blood after all. It was red paint. It was hard to understand the first time but I did understand the second time. Then I heard all about it. Case Closed!
The Mysterious Note
by Ellie Kelly
At the water park at 12:00 p.m. sharp, there were two kids named Oscar and Danny. Danny was short for Danelia, and Oscar was just short for Oscar. They were swimming. Oscar and Danny saw a note. It said, "Do not tell anyone, that there is purple food coloring in the pool. Once you read this, keep it and do not show anyone!" These kids were very smart. They were in the newspapers. When there was a case, they were on the job.
Oscar and Danny thought, "Who would put purple food coloring in the pool?" Oscar said, ".There was that girl that had purple pants on." The Danny said, "She could have bought them that way." "True." said Oscar.
Danny said, "Mike the bully had purple drops on his shoes."
"He had purple drops on his shoes the day he went to 8th grade and that was long before we got this note." said Oscar.
"That all leads us to Ms. Carpenter. She went swimming in the pool today." Danny added.
"I thought I saw a purple food coloring bottle peaking out of her bag and I saw no bottle at all when she went home." said Danny.
"Aren't you in her class?" said Oscar.
"Yes." said Danny. "She has been acting really weird lately."
Danny and Oscar went to see Ms. Carpenter to solve this mystery. The days passed and it was Monday, time for recess. Danny asked Ms. Carpenter, "Did you put purple food coloring in the pool?"
"O.K. I admit it. I did it!" Ms. Carpenter confessed.
"Why?" asked Danny.
"Because the owner and I used to work together and we had a race and he won, but I deserved to win." Ms. Carpenter explained.
The days passed and it was spring break. Danny's mom promised to call Mayor Dave and tell him what happened. So Danny's mom did and the Mayor said, "She will have to go to jail for a week!" "Hey, Danny!" said Oscar.
Danny said, "What?"
Oscar said, "This case is closed!"

The Mystery of the Missing Money
by Aushea Lore
It is dark in the morning. I get dropped off. It is a school day. The door is swinging back and forth. No body is there because my mom has to go to work really early at 5:00. Everything is empty. Green glowing footsteps lead inside. The moon is out. The power is out. I run inside and light a candle. Then I sit down.
I hear a scream from another classroom. It sounds like a little girl. My fellow girl detectives and I are on the case. We find the little girl and she is scared. She just saw three strangers with green glowing hands in her classroom. We find every single clue that has been left. We solve mysteries a lot. I call the detectives to come in and find some clues. Their names are Ellie, Peyton, Maranda, and me, Aushea. There are glowing hand prints and foot prints on the floor and on the desk in room 14 and leading to the office. We researched harder and found a team of bad guys; Traykun, Oscar, and Josh. All of them had green glowing paint o their hands. We searched around and found a bucket of purple and green glowing paint in the boys' bathroom. We walk to the cashier place in Miss Becky's office. There is green glowing paint on the cash box. There is no money. We finally find out that Traykun is their leader by his green hands. The name of their club is OJ and big T. They meet in Big T's tree house.
The girl detectives researched people with the same matching finger prints. They found all three. They found Josh and Oscar and Traykun's tree house. They found the paint on the floor, the same paint as the green glowing and purple glowing paint.
Claire found another clue; a name tag! Traykun's name tag. Traykun came in. Peyton snuck right behind Traykun and said "Put your hands up!" We got him! We took him to the judge and the judge said he was guilty. He gave up. He told everything; even where they lived. So we went to Josh's house and found $35.00 The next day we went to Oscar's house but he was not there. The detectives searched all over town but they could not find him. He was out of town. Finally they found him in Colorado. There is still some money missing. They thought and thought. Finally they went to Traykun's house. They looked all over the house. They found $35.00. So they went to Oscar's house. They looked all over the house. Aushea and Claire found $35.00. They walked outside and counted the money. There was $105.00. There was supposed to be $110.00. There is still $5.00 missing. Then they searched the tree house and found the other $5.00. Then they went to Red Rock Elementary School and returned the money. The Poison Acid at H.M.K.
By Cade Gill
It was a dark and rainy night and the whole H.M.K. school was empty. There are people by the school. They are hanging out with friends. Then I heard a scream from the school! Then police men started to surround the school. There was an ambulance racing to the HMK school. I could hear the ambulance all the way from Jimbos down the street. Then the next morning on the way to school there was no one there! The ambulance came by. We stopped them and they said the students we heard the night before got picked up by their families this morning from the hospital. They said there was poison acid at H.M.K. "What?" I said. "Comet, my dog, and I have to solve that mystery!" Comet and I always solve mysteries around town. After school that day I was walking Comet to the park. Then I heard a soft crash from the school. I tied my dog's collar to a bench in front of the school by the bikes. Then the Principal came out of the school. I went in front of Comet and ducked down behind the bikes. She didn't see us. I went fast and barely got in the school before the door closed. I was about to go in the gym but all of a sudden, my dog started to bark really, really loud. I ran back out of the school as fast as I could. He was barking at a figure running really fast on top of the roof. I tried to get on the roof but I couldn't find a way. Comet and I went home.
I wrote in my detective journal that it was a Monday. Mondays are short days at school. I was on my way home and I heard a noise. I ran in the school but all I saw was a fake gun and a sign that said "BEWARE! Do not come in the building!" I decided to go home. That night I just couldn't stop thinking about the crime. Five days later on a Saturday I went inside the HMK school just to look around for some clues but there was nothing. I went to where I saw the gun and the sign but what I saw were glowing green footprints going out the window. I made notes in my detective journal. That Sunday after church I went walking to HMK. It was very windy outside. I left then I heard a crash. I turned around and saw Tray and Alec on the ground. They were on top of the roof and then they fell off. Then I said "Have you seen anything suspicious?" They said "No." Then I saw red wet paint on the blacktop. By the way, Tray and Alec were okay. I wrote in my journal again.
Four days later was Thursday. School was just over. Comet and I went to HMK. Then Comet ran as fast as his little legs could carry him. In the gym I heard a crash. Behind the curtains I saw America and my Aunt Colleen. They told me there was poison acid in the school. Then I asked them "Why are you in the school?" They told me they had been setting stuff up around the school to try to get people out of the school so they wouldn't get hurt by the acid. "That's why there were glowing green footprints going out the window, the fake gun and the wet red paint on the ground!" I said. "Yes!" said America.
I asked, "Then why were students in the hospital?" "Because the acid got on them." said my Aunt Colleen.
Then we got all the acid out of the school. As it turns out, the acid came out of the sinks and fountains because a pipe broke. Then we lived happily ever after. P.S. Comet got married and had puppies and they lived happily ever after too.
The Water Park Mystery
by Traykun Lesmeister
At the King World Water Park, the pool was overflowing. The detectives are Traykun, boy genius, and his sidekick Mrs. Carpenter. There is a mystery here and we're going to solve it. Traykun and Mrs. Carpenter could hear foot steps and saw green foot prints. It is blazing hot Someone hops into the pool. His skin turns green. "The water was poisoned last night." said Traykun. We heard footsteps and saw green foot prints. "There's some poison drops! That's what turned that guys skin green I guess. I also heard an evil laugh." said Traykun. "What did it sound like?" asked Ms. Carpenter. "Mrs. Robertson." replied Traykun. "Let's go ask her." said Ms. Carpenter. So they asked Mrs. Robertson "Did you put poison in the pool?" questioned Traykun. "No way!" Now let's go ask Mrs. Swanson. "Did you put poison in the pool?" grilled Traykun "No. Oscar is acting very suspicious. He must have done it. Let's go ask. "Did you poison the pool?" "No, but then he looked scared. "What! You did do it!" He started to run. "Get him. He poisoned the pool!" He's getting away. Then a lifeguard got him. "Let's take him to jail." said Traykun. "Yes I agree." added Ms. Carpenter. "Nooooooo!" wailed Oscar.
